11/25/17 Bear Mountain. NY
Visitors from all parts of the local area enjoyed a mild late fall day last Saturday at Bear Mountain State Park. With the sun glowing, calm winds, and temperatures in the 50’s, it was a great day for a walk, hike, or even a run.
159 runners, all who have graduated prior to 2018, rekindled the high school athlete inside of them at The Bill Markiewicz Rockland County Alumni XC Run. It has been a tradition since 1983, hosted annually at the Bear Mountain site the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
The race dons the name of late Bill Markiewicz, the head coach of the Rockland County cross country and track teams through 70’s and 80’s. This race displays the tight knit community of the Rockland County runners, as they come each year to remember the impact he made on all his athletes throughout the years.
Over the years the race has expanded from just the Rockland area, this year fielding 7 complete (5 runners) teams, from Orange and Rockland Counties. Runners from 40 high schools, and 7 states competed in the 3 mile course that many remember as their state qualifying course back in the glory days of their high school careers.
Men and Women start together, toeing up on the line facing the Bear Mountain Inn. Men’s and Women’s teams are scored individually, just as they would be in high school. Top five runners from each team score, the team with the lowest score wins.
This year in the women’s race, Monroe Woodbury won unopposed, scoring 30 points. Local Goshen Alumna Angelique Atlas, class of 2016, ran the 3 mile course 23:19, placing 70th overall. Atlas was the fourth female finisher overall.
In the men’s race, 7 teams competed for the alumni championship. Monroe Woodbury, headed by 2015 graduate, Jack Jibb, came first overall scoring a low score of 40. Suffern followed behind with 75 points, Pearl River coming in at 114, and hometown Clarkstown North scoring 151. Goshen then broke up the Clarkstown’s by scoring 179 points, followed closely behind by Clarkstown South scoring 198. Albertus Magnus finished 7th, scoring 485 points.
Coming off his junior year running at SUNY Polytechnic Institute, 2015 Goshen graduate Jesse Chain led the team over the 3.0 mile course in 18:43, placing 17th. 2012 graduate Shai Ben-Dor ran a solid second place for Goshen, finishing in 19:14 for 24th overall. Coming in right behind Ben-Dor, 2017 graduate Kevin Long ran 19:15, placing 25th. Long is coming off his freshmen year running at Wilkes University. Dan Markiewicz, son of the late Bill Markiewicz and Goshen graduate of 1996, ran 22:17 placing 65th. Rounding out Goshen’s top five scoring runners was Nick Sullivan, a 2013 graduate. Sullivan ran 21:24, good for 53rd place.
Other Goshen alumni who participated include Jeff Cerefice, a 1993 graduate, who ran 24:13 placing 78th. Matt Markiewicz, a 1993 graduate, ran 26:03 placing 99th. And Brendan Byrne, a 2015 graduate, ran 27:29 placing 113th.
